barely made it to the end September 2, 2010 Philly Reader (Philadelphia) I finished the book but wish I hadn't kept trying to see what others found so interesting about the book and had just put it aside and moved on to something else. I had a new kindle and was exploring the quality of the freebies that are offered. The circumstances are pretty far fetched. There are so many other good books and authors on my "I want to read list" I'm not that thrilled I invested the time in this.
Murder without the mystery September 1, 2010 Barry B I must admit that I had high hopes when I started reading this novel. There's nothing like a good mystery, a whodunit full of intrigue and suspicious characters. Jason Boyer is a likeable protagonist, although somewhat flawed and much too clueless for a hero. Jason spends an inordinate amount of time on questions such as "Why am I here?" "Why am I rich and not poor?" "Did my father love me--or only his riches and power?" The repetition of these questions becomes tiresome after awhile and I found the denouement unsatisfying.
The questions that make this potentially a mystery are,
"Was the rich father murdered?"
"The rich man's widow subsequently dies--is it murder or suicide?"
The police detective, part of a corrupt political system, is too awed by the rich and powerful to do his job. He asks point-blank,"Mr. Boyer, don't you want us to find your father's murderer?"
Jason retorts, "He's dead, and the rest doesn't matter."
Here's where it falls apart--no one in the story cares about the answers to the questions about the murders. Why then should the reader? When the murders multiply, finally the solution to the puzzle falls into Jason's lap--much like his unwanted riches--without much effort or desire on his part.
What were the redeeming parts for me? (I finished the story to the end, after all). I liked Jason's wife, Katie; his late father's secretary, Pamela; and his brother, Eric. If one of these likable characters had also committed to some detective work, and taken that task out of Jason's incapable hands, then the story would have been thoroughly enjoyable in my view.
Disappointing August 30, 2010 I was 3/4 through this book before it actually got interesting. So much talk of things with not much happening. Not worth my time.
00 price is appropriate August 29, 2010 suzsez 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Heir by Paul Robertson was appropriately priced at .00. I read to the end of the book because I did wonder where the plot was headed and I am one of those people who will read anything. There was some merit to the plot, but, the writing is so awkward, and the characters are so one dimensional that it was painful. The author's knowledge of business, finance, and politics is minimal at best, and it detracts from the moral he is trying to convey. While I appreciate the intended moral lesson, I've read many well written books which have better illustrated the consequences of not making good moral choices and the randomness of fate.
Twists and turns August 27, 2010 This is the first book that I've read by Paul Robertson, but it won't be the last! Just about the time I thought that I had it figured out there would be another twist. I would highly recommend this book.
